Twitter Interview on Index Insurance

There have been significant developments in index-based insurance in recent years and good results stemming from innovative and more accurate indexes and business models using distribution channels that are better adapted to jurisdictions' realities. These are the upcoming A2ii report's opening findings from the index insurance survey conducted with supervisors and representatives of the industry in 2020.

In the report, the A2ii provides an overview of how supervisory interest in index-based insurance evolved over the past five years, particularly in emerging markets and developing economies, including examples from the surveyed jurisdictions.

Three regulatory approaches stand out: i) specific legislation/regulation; ii) legal opinions based on the 'insurable interest' at the date of contracting; and iii) pilot/regulatory sandbox. The report lists country-specific examples of the main regulatory approaches and explains them further.
In addition to this, the report presents the main regulatory and supervisory concerns, characteristics and scope of index insurance products, information on product innovations from the industry side, and the critical role of technical and development agencies in index insurance development.

Join us in a live Twitter chat with the author of the report, Regina Simoes, the A2ii Regional Coordinator for Latin America.

Public dialogue

On 25 March, the A2ii and IAIS will hold a public dialogue on Index-based Insurance, at 10:00 CET in English and French and 16:00 CET in English and Spanish. Click here to register.

The A2ii will share results from the 2020 survey that was conducted with supervisors and other stakeholders on the current state of index insurance, the outcomes of which will also be published in a corresponding paper. In addition, participants will hear from industry experts as well as supervisory authorities who will share their experiences.

The use of index insurance as an alternative to traditional indemnity-based insurance has increased over the last years, particularly as a mechanism for insuring extreme weather risks. Index insurance – also known as parametric insurance – has been evolving. Today, it reaches a wide range of customers, at the micro, meso and macro levels, ranging from the most vulnerable segments of the population to the most sophisticated and complex sectors.
